Hugo Christian-Slane's profile

Slane - Typeface / Specimen Book

Slane is an exploration into typeface design that is highly legible in ‘rapid serial visual presentation.’ This is the experimental display of information as images, at speeds of up to 10 forms a second, at a single point.

Slane was designed as a midground between geometric and humanist type-groups. The aim is to synthesize the recognisability values of geometric type-groups desired in headings with the readability of humanist forms used in bodies of text. This steers the type towards being quickly recognised and read on-screen in a single-word format at high speeds.

Slane is showcased in the ‘type specimen book’ provided, where Slane is displayed in rapid serial visual presentation at 300 wpm (words per minute). This is 25% faster than ‘fast readers’, with greater comprehension than reading traditionally.

I believe there can be a more functional approach to the absorption of information in the digital age and world of smart-devices.
